In 2014, Israel instituted this day of recognition for the roughly 850,000 Jews who were expelled from their homes in Arab countries after the 1947 UN vote to end the British Mandate of Palestine and create a Jewish and an Arab state, thereby allowing the establishment of the State of Israel.
